Walmer Castle, which became the home of The Duke of Wellington, and was the late Queen Mother’s favourite, is just along the coast with gardens and tea rooms open from April until October, and their scones are highly recommended! Deal was the most important Naval base in Britain during the Age of Sail and although long gone, its maritime heritage is still inherent in its Conservation Area architecture and house names. Deal became a smuggler’s paradise during the 1700s, and heritage street maps show where rum and brandy were rolled by casket avoiding the Excise men. Why not take the cycle path from Deal to Kingsdown, a pretty Kent village with views across to France? Here you can rest and recuperate in one of the three pubs all serving excellent food. If golf is your game then there are 12 courses within a 30 minute journey, but Royal Cinque Ports, Royal St. Georges and Kingsdown are within an easy distance. For sheer imposing magnificence nearby Dover Castle is an absolute must visit on any visitor’s list.
